Project Overview: Huge Lanterns in Chinese Festivals
In China, the tradition of celebrating festivals through vibrant lantern shows has existed since ancient times. Among these festivities, huge Chinese lanterns have become an indispensable element, renowned for their massive scale and breathtaking visual effects. They serve not only as treasured gems of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage but also as profound symbols of light and hope.
Every October coincides with the ‘Golden Week’ of China’s National Day, a period witnessing a massive surge in tourists nationwide. This presents the perfect opportunity to host lantern festivals in celebration of the holiday.
Theme inspiration: The Fusion of Shan Hai Jing and Black Myth:Sun Wukong
In early September 2024, we initiated preparations for the ‘Goddess of Mountains and Seas’ themed lantern festival. This creative showcase is rooted in ancient Chinese mythology and folklore. Simultaneously, keeping pace with pop culture, we integrated elements from the recent hit ‘Black Myth: Wukong’—widely adored by young audiences—into our designs. Our goal was to craft a modern lantern festival that harmonizes tradition with contemporary flair, perfectly resonating with the aesthetic sensibilities of the younger generation.
We have recreated the charm of mythical worlds countless times, among which the story of the Chinese classic “Journey to the West” is particularly well-known. Recently, the Chinese masterpiece in the gaming world, “Black Myth: Wukong,” has set off a global craze and become the focus of heated discussion. To pay tribute to this cultural phenomenon, we have conducted in-depth research and meticulously crafted the image of Wukong, aiming to provide visitors with an excellent opportunity to take a commemorative photo with this legendary hero.
In addition, our mythical world is not lacking in the embellishment of animal lantern and plant lanterns. Our goal is to create a complete mythical world at night, allowing every visitor to immerse themselves in this environment filled with fantastic colors.
In order to realize this vision, we have carefully designed a variety of lanterns in the shape of animals. From the mighty dragon to the clever phoenix, from the mysterious unicorn to the lovely jade rabbit. And all Chinese lanterns are lifelike, as if it will jump out of the fairy tale at any time.
At the same time, we also cleverly arranged a variety of plant lanterns, such as blooming peonies, swaying willow branches, and bright star flowers, they and animal lanterns complement each other, together to form a vivid mythological picture.
From Blueprint to reality: The exquisite craftsmanship of Giant lanterns
Imagine an 8-meter-tall goddess head statue standing gracefully on the shimmering water surface. Such a spectacular sight has become a beautiful landscape in mainland China in recent years. These large mythological character lanterns, presented in the form of busts, with their astonishing size, craftsmanship detailed down to every strand of hair, and lifelike mechanical movements, have brought an unprecedented visual impact to people.
1. Framework Construction (Wire Frame Shaping)
Materials & Craftsmanship:
Steel wires are used for 3D shaping. Artisans manually bend flat wires into dimensional structures, which are then welded securely to ensure structural rigidity.
Detail Refinement:
Shapes are perfected according to design blueprints (e.g. facial contours, clothing folds) to achieve faithful character representation.
2. Surface Covering & Treatment
Covering Material:
Skeletons are covered with satin fabric (smooth synthetic cloth) to create an even surface for coloring.
Facial Detailing:
Faces are first covered with white or skin-tone fabric, then hand-painted by artisans using acrylic paints and airbrushes to add eyebrows, eyes, blush, and other lifelike features.
3. Coloring & Decoration
Spray-painting Technique:
Body sections are spray-painted uniformly to match design specifications and ensure color consistency.
Ornamental Elements:
Characters wear hairpins and ancient-style costumes in pale pink, with textures and hues meticulously crafted for visual impact.
4. Lighting & Interactive Design
Internal Lighting:
LED light strips are installed within the framework, with effects calibrated for nighttime brilliance.
Dynamic Interaction:
Programmed mechanisms enable motions (e.g., blinking eyes), enhancing visitor engagement through technology-driven interactivity.
5. Thematic Scene Integration
Landscape & Floral Elements:
Auxiliary lantern sets (mountains, peonies) surround the main piece to immerse viewers in a cohesive narrative and atmospheric setting.
6.Production Cycle ＆ Team Collaboration
Duration:
Full process (production → transport → assembly) takes ~1 month, including >10 work shifts for covering/coloring and 3 days for detail work by 4 artisans.
