Bringing the Legend to Life: A Monumental Outdoor Installation

Forest Painting Lantern successfully collaborated with the Huangshan Scenic Area to create a landmark display featuring the popular movie IP “Nezha”.

This project demonstrates our engineering capability to transform complex 2D anime characters into giant, tycoon-proof 3D lantern structures ranging from 3m to 10m in height. Below is the technical snapshot of this challenging installation.

The Challenge: Bringing Nezha Character Lanterns to Life Outdoors

When the Huangshan Scenic Area Camping Base decided to leverage the massive popularity of the animated movie Nezha 2, they faced a dual challenge.

First, they needed custom anime lanterns that were strictly faithful to the movie’s IP characters. Fans are extremely critical of character details, and any “bootleg” quality would damage the immersive experience. Second, the installation site was an open outdoor area frequently hit by strong mountain winds.

The client needed more than just decoration; they needed a structural engineering solution for their outdoor theme park lantern setup. This case study details how Forest Painting Lantern executed this modern adaptation of Chinese lanterns specifically for a commercial theme park environment.

Solution 1: High-Fidelity Anime Lantern Artistry

The Difficulty: Unlike traditional festival lanterns, commercial anime lanterns require razor-sharp precision. The character “Nezha” is famous for his “Smoky Makeup” and rebellious smirk. Standard production methods often distort these exaggerated 2D expressions when inflating them into 3D silk forms.

Our Process: To ensure the Nezha character lanterns were 100% accurate to the movie design:

  • 3D Lofting: We utilized 3D modeling software to generate a precise scale layout on the ground. This was crucial because even the smallest figure stood over 3 meters tall, making proportional accuracy difficult to judge by eye.
  • High-Density Framework: For the facial areas, we increased the steel wireframe density by 300%. This high-density mesh allowed for finer silk stretching, capturing the subtle curvature of the eyes and mouth without the fabric bunching up.
  • Artistic Painting: Instead of simple flat coloring, our senior artisans used a combination of airbrushing and hand-painting. This technique allowed us to replicate the “CGI gradient texture” of the movie character’s skin and armor, ensuring the giant figure lanterns looked impressive even in daylight.

Solution 2:The Lighting Engineering

The Hidden Difficulty：A common failure in figure lanterns is poor internal lighting. Anime characters often have complex color palettes—Nezha features pale skin but dark red pants. If a standard uniform light source is used, the face will look washed out (ghostly), while the dark pants will appear dim and unlit.

Our Solution: Zoned Lighting System We treated the lantern body like a stage.

  • Facial Zone: We used high-CRI (Color Rendering Index) warm LED strips (3000K) to give the character a natural, lively skin tone.
  • Costume Zone: For the dark red armor and pants, we installed high-intensity cool white LED bulbs to punch through the darker silk fabric, ensuring the colors remained vibrant at night.
  • Seamless Wiring: All electrical wires were hidden within the skeletal structure to  prevent any internal shadows from projecting onto the silk surface.

Solution 3: Engineering Giant Lanterns for Typhoon Resistance

The Scale Challenge (3m – 10m) ：The display featured a range of colossal figures: the smallest stood at 3 meters, others at 5 to 8 meters, and the centerpiece “Lady Shiji” towered at 10 meters. In an outdoor environment, structures of this magnitude act like giant sails. With a typhoon forecast approaching, standard weighting would have been a safety hazard.

Our Process: We engineered a heavy-duty installation solution:

  • Concrete Foundation: For all large-scale character lanterns over 3 meters, we poured custom reinforced concrete bases on-site.
  • Triangular Wind-Rope System: We installed high-tensile steel cables to counterbalance wind loads from multiple directions.
  • Internal Reinforcement: The internal skeleton was upgraded to thicker-gauge steel to prevent bending.

Engineering safety: Installing the 10-meter giant figure onto a custom reinforced concrete foundation to withstand typhoon winds.

Material & Durability for Commercial Lantern Displays

To ensure long-term quality for this outdoor lantern project, we utilized:

  • UV Resistance: High-grade pigments that resist fading under sunlight.
  • LED Energy Saving: IP65 waterproof LED sources for safety.

Despite the tight deadline and adverse weather, the project was delivered 100% on schedule. The “Nezha” display transformed the campsite’s nighttime atmosphere, becoming the area’s most photographed spot.

While fiberglass is permanent, silk figure lanterns offer a unique “nighttime vitality” that solid sculptures cannot match.
